Yes, you're not forced to work together. You can though. It's just that some people prefer to maximize profits (grind). You can do level 4 missions in a fleet, but people prefer grinding alone in a faction ship / marauder. You can do level 5 missions in a fleet, but some people prefer taking their command ship in solo. You choose ...

Either you live in a very calm worm-hole / 0.0 system, or your doing something wrong. Every system has it's regulars. Try one of the trade hubs and tell me again that there are no "cities where you can meet people".

Yes, that's why you should look for a corp that is not doing everything from mining to exploration and missioning and, and, and ...
Originally by: Jennifer Fenring A lot of EVE veterans don't care about this but I think it's something EVE is still missing and I hope the Incarna "walking in stations" feature will solve that hiatus once it gets released and we will become a bit less ships and a bit more the persons flying them. In other words: a bit less MMO and a bit more RPG.
Meh, I say ... of course I'm looking forward to Incarna, but seriously: if you lack the imagination to make your character come alive, you shouldn't be talking about RPG at all. Not so long ago, RPers were quite happy with pen, paper and D12. In EVE I never felt that I was a ship, duh ! I always was and still am the pilot.
Originally by: Jennifer Fenring There also isn't a quick PvP option where you can queue for battles, if you're a low skill character with t1 stuff you can't do a lot on your own.
Except the player organized RvB (Red vs Blue), which is quick PvP 23/7 and welcomes low-SP characters. A little less easy to access is faction warfare. Yet it is a good place for every pilot interested in going to low-sec on a regular basis. Only downside is, that you have to be commited, since you won't be able to travel all over eve while in FW. You may even completely lose free access to your enemy faction's space.
Originally by: Jennifer Fenring In lowsec most people fly in cruisers or at least "pimped" frigs and a lot of skillpoints that make them have twice your damage and hp.
Still the clue is to find people to do things with. In EVE corps are more important than in other games. Doing things together, things like wormholes or forming small roaming PvP teams can be fun. For the rest earning money to get nice stuff can give some satisfaction as well.
Yet I can imagine you'd leave EVE for a few months while keeping your training queue filled and come back once you have some basic leraning and support stuff trained up. Most people fill the time by either mining a little for ISK or doing missions to get some good standings with corporations for ISK and LP. But if you wait a few months and skill up in the meantime you can do all that a lot quicker with 10 times the reward.
The only good advice in here, is to find people you can do stuff together with. The rest is almost bad advice. There is so much to learn in eve that it is often better to learn these things while mistakes are not costly. Everytime you step up to a more expensive shipclass / weaponsystem / implant / clone-grade, it will hurt more when you do a mistake.
Once you have seen an industrial ship kill a faction frigate or a simple destroyer kill a tech 2 interceptor, you won't think that eve is only about having ten-thousands of skillpoints and the most expensive modules equipped. Eve is about learning the game-mechanics and then using them to your advantage. More skillpoints only open more options and may make some tactics easier, they are never an "I win"-button.
